It's all about the Story Lines

So who's up for a game of guess who!?

1. This Quarterback was drafted late his year. He was the last string QB on a team that decided to carry four players in that position. Scouts said he lacked great physical stature and strength. They said he could't throw a tight spiral. They said he lacked mobility and the ability to avoid the rush. Most scouts thought he would be nothing more than a backup in the NFL.

2. This QB was drafted more towards the middle of the event. He was known to have a good arm but one scout noted that he only went to one receiver and would force it to him even if he was in a crowd. He was called cocky and a gambler. It was assumed he could eventually start despite he fact that he didn't have great tools. He sat the bench his whole first season in the league and split time his second year.

3. This QB was taken in the first round but behind several others at his position. He was thought to have good tools but was very raw. He was said to have no throwing motion and wasn't expected to be a top prospect. During the two seasons before he entered the league, no other undergraduate athlete threw more interceptions. Beyond all of this, he had a bad attitude and was immatue. He touted himself as the best QB in the draft even after he was picked so late.

Do you know who's who?

1. Tom Brady

2. Joe Montana

3. Dan Marino

Interesting right?

Now time for a joke:

Where did the book wait at the amusement park?
         In the Story Lines!

Man! This blog is informative and entertaining!

The NFL is built on story lines. Both the expected and the wildly unexpected. From Brett Favre's long and consistent career to Tim Tebow's short and unstable time in the spot light. Football is only around for around 22 weeks with one game a week per team. People need something to talk about all week along until we get new material from the following week. Plus, the NFL has the longest off-season of any sport. We need something to talk about then too! With literally months and months separating us from even the first pre-season game, what do we talk about in the mean time? What fills the void of talk for our favorite sport?

Well for now, we have lots to discuss! The hot story right now is Peyton Manning and his new home of Denver. Will Peyton Manning shine like the star he is or fizzle out trying too hard? And there's a laundry list of other possible story lines too! Will highly touted back up, Matt Flynn, succeed in his new role in Seattle? With Alex Smith  returning to San Fran after all this hoopla, will there be bad blood between him and the organization? Will Tebow succeed in his new role in New York? Will he ever get to play at all?
"I'm really excited for sports bloggers for this upcoming exciting season...excitement!"

And let's not forget the Draft! Two headlining QB's come out back to back this year at pick one and two. Luck has been the long time favorite but RG3 is stealing his way into our hearts. Will each fit well in their new roles, or will the NFL be too much for them? Is there a surprise Tom Brady-esque player that no one has jumped on yet?

I think, for this year, that's where the true story lines lie. After RG3, the list of QB's is long if a bit slim. Ryan Tannehill, out of Texas A&M, is a possible look for Miami, and Brandon Weeden out of Oklahoma State is not far behind. Neither of these QB have great footwork or timing, but could they grow in an NFL system? Could they step up and take over the reigns for a injury prone Kevin Kolb or Jay Culter? Can they replace the seemingly inefficient Matt Moore?

And can we not forget the main reason I am getting this article done now. Adam Schefter has reported that the Miami Dolphins have reached out to Brett Favre for the 2012 season. Like what!? No explanation needed.Only one question: Will this happen?

It's impossible to know the answer to any of these questions because of how crazy and unpredictable the NFL is. But whether all of these QB's succeed or if they all flop, they all are going to make for some amazing story lines. Luck v. Manning. Luck v. RG3. Tebow v. Manning. Favre v. The World! I don't even know if any of these match ups will happen but can you imagine the hype!

This doesn't even include the story lines we can't predict! The Bradys and Montanas and Marinos. Who will step up and shine? Who will come out of nowhere and shock the world? As a sports blogger, I cannot help being beyond overjoyed for this coming season. There will be no shortage of things to talk about! No shortages of surprises! And the biggest surprise would be if this season is a complete lack luster event and none of these story lines come to fruition. Even then we can talk about the lack of story lines! Thank you, NFL! We can't lose!
