It's kind of a big deal: Calvin Johnson

Hello Pros and Bros out there! And welcome to a new article series where we discuss the signings of the free agency period and trades. Since it's a big time for the NFL we'll be mainly focusing on that but there will be more! You just wait!

Today were going to talk about a deal that just got done.

Calvin Johnson signs with the Detroit Lions for 7 years $130 Million!

Woah! I don't know how to put this, but...It's kind of a big deal!

Calvin scored big with this deal and he deserves it. There is no better deep threat in the league today then Megatron himself. He is not the sole reason for the Detroit Lions turn around this year, but he is a massive part of it. Without him, Matthew Stafford doesn't grow into the QB he became this year. Brandon Pettigrew can only do so much.

With this deal, Johnson becomes the highest paid WR in the league. He was already making the second most money last season behind Larry Fitzgerald and just ahead of Brandon Marshall and Steve Smith. Jim Schwartz might give wussy hand shakes, but he's no dummy. He knew he had to lock up Calvin before the future free agent market even began to speculate.

My favorite part about this deal was the timing. Calvin Johnson was not a free agent so all of this was handled in house. They didn't even have to wait for free agency to sign him. Both parties knew what the deal would be long in advance but they waited. Why? Look at the WR deals yesterday. Reggie Wayne, 3 years $17.5 Million. Vincent Jackson, 5 years $55 Million. Randy Moss, 1 year with no guaranteed money.

I feel like Calvin was just sitting back and watching these little baby deals come to life and waited until today to drop the hammer. I assume it went a little like this:

"Aw that's cute Vincent Jackson! That's a really cute deal! I especially like your completely incentive based contract Randy! Oh what's that? How much will my contract be for? I'm not sure! Oh wait! Yeah, I'm sure now...7 YEARS! $130 MILLION! Yes that's the biggest contract in Wide Receiver history! Wooo!"
I assume he did a little dance after that.

I don't know how to put this...but that's kind of a big deal.

  1. I think he deserves it and will only continue to get better. He has the heart and drive to be a winner. But the tough part is that they are in the division as DA Bears and Packers. Going to be tough to pass them up and get a playoff spot.

  2. He not only makes the Lions better but gives a great deal more validity to the NFC North in general. If there defense keeps on the track they're going now, the rivalry between those three is going to become insane!
